John Harding and Martin Maher competed in the Essex 100 bike ride in June this year and raised a whopping £480 for BOPH! John and Martin are good friends and keen athletes, competing in runs and marathons as well as bike rides for charity.
The bike ride was held over a 100 mile course starting in Ilford. The course runs 100 miles through the Essex countryside travelling through Dagenham, Epping, Kelvedon, Chelmsford and finishing back in Ilford. There are 35 and 60 mile versions of the route for all levels of rider. The event was organised by Bike Events, the UK’s largest organiser of fund raising and recreational cycle rides.
John finished the ride in 4 hours 39 minutes after tackling the 60 mile route which contained 1800 inclines throughout. John kindly gave us a video of his ride captured on a GoPro camera which you can watch a clip of below:
To raise money for the event, John set up a Just Giving page to collect donations for BOPH which is a quick and easy way to collect donations. John and Martin managed to raise £480 for BOPH by collecting donations from friends, family and others online. If you are looking to help raise some money for BOPH then check out John’s JustGiving page for inspiration.
Both John and Martin really enjoyed themselves on the bike ride and are looking ahead to competing in more events like this in the future. In fact, they have just completed the London to Southend Off Road and in September, John will be taking part in the London to Brighton Bike Ride and he will be out competing again in the Southend 10k Classic in October! We wish both John and Martin the best of luck!
Athletic events like this are a great way to raise money for charity and you get so much out of it too. We hope more people can be inspired by John and Martin and take a page out of their book.
